The Cranbrook Tritons recently held their “Swim Wars” regional meet, referencing a Star Wars theme, as the event was held on May 4/5 (May the fourth be with you) at the aquatic centre in Western Financial Place.
Over 120 athletes from around the region took to the water, competing in all kinds of disciplines, including approximately 35 from the Tritons club — many of whom were competing in their first swim meet.
“This year we’re trying to make it a bit more fun for the kids, we’ve got some Star Wars themed races,” said Tritons club president Phil Aston.
In between the swimming action, members of the Cranbrook Colonels Hockey Club stopped by to donate $1,000 towards the Tritons Club, which is going to go towards some backstroke wedges, according to Aston.
The wedges, which run about $2,000 apiece, are submerged along a pool wall to help provide a base to start a backstroke event.
“We’ve been earmarking it for a couple years and just haven’t been able to do it, so this is huge, it really is,” said Aston.
Aston said the local business community was also hugely supportive of the event, by donating items and prizes for the athletes.
