Pet rescue society Meant 2B Loved is facing difficult times as donations are down and volunteers are harder to find.

Meant 2B Loved Pet Rescue Society’s (M2BL) goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome domestic animals in need. However, the rescue is having a challenging time with the ‘rehabilitate’ part these days.

The Society is launching Tina’s Trust, a fund focused on covering costs related to animals who require expensive medical care.

Board member Darryl Dux explained in a press release that the Society has really noticed a decline in donations just as they have two seriously ill dogs who require medical care.

“These dogs had been adopted just before we knew they had health issues, so of course we’re going to cover the costs of the treatments. The families of Takhina and Tracker are already in love with them, we have to do what we can to save them,” Dux said.

Tina’s Trust is named for Tina, a dog taken in by M2BL in late 2023 who was emaciated and close to death. Emergency surgery eventually found that she had swallowed a corn cob that was lodged in her intestine; a situation that would have been a death sentence without the surgery. Tina has recovered and is in her new home.

“We want more happy stories like Tina’s but to do so requires a significant financial commitment. Our hope is we can build Tina’s Trust over time so that we don’t have to hesitate at all when an animal needs lifesaving care, we’ll know there is a fund to cover some or all of the expenses,” Dux said.

Aside from cash contributions, one of the ways Meant 2B Loved raises funds is through donated bottles, cans and milk containers, which have to be sorted into bags before going to the depot. The volunteer who took care of that has retired and the Society is looking for someone to come forward and take over that duty.

There is also uncertainty this year as to whether the Society will be able to access vouchers to cover the cost of spaying or neutering feral cats.

“The uncertainty around the vouchers is a definite concern,” Dux said. “Almost $20,000 in spay/neuter costs were covered by them in 2023 so that is a huge loss for us this year if we’re unable to access them.”

Meant 2B Loved will also be holding a Bake Sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 11 at Home Hardware in Cranbrook with proceeds going to Tina’s Trust.
